Five Hypnosis Myths Busted

“Can hypnosis be used to control my mind?”

“Will I fall asleep during my session?”

“Is it possible to get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis??”

There sure are a lot of myths going around about hypnosis! To put your mind at ease and uncover the truth, we’re busting five common misconceptions about the practice of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

As you’ll discover, hypnosis is an incredibly effective and totally safe form of therapy that can help you achieve your life goals and become the most fabulous version of yourself!

Hypnosis Myth 1: Hypnosis is a form of mind control

No, I’m not here to hijack your brain! Hypnosis is NOT a form of mind control. In fact, a hypnotherapist can’t make you do anything against your wishes.

You’re not ‘helpless’ during hypnosis, nor will you lose control of your normal behaviours and moral standards. While hypnotherapy can make you more open to suggestions at a subconscious level - which is why it’s used to help shift you towards more positive choices -your mind isn’t able to be controlled by a hypnotherapist.

Hypnosis Myth 2: You lose consciousness during hypnosis

If you were hoping to get a quick nap in during your hypnosis session, I’m sorry to disappoint you. While your eyes may be closed, hypnosis isn’t a form of sleep and you certainly won’t lose consciousness during your hypnotherapy session.

You’ll still have awareness of your surroundings and will be able to clearly hear and understand what I say to you during your session. You won’t be in an unconscious state, nor will you lose touch with your sense of reality.

Hypnosis Myth 3: You can get stuck in hypnosis

Worried that you might be in a hypnotic trance forever? Don’t stress - it’s not possible to get stuck in hypnosis. You’ll naturally come out of your state of hypnosis once the hypnotherapy session ends, and will feel completely normal.

As stated above, you don’t lose consciousness or fall asleep during hypnosis - you’ll simply be paying very close attention to a particular area of focus. Once your attention eases, you’ll be back to your usual state.

Hypnosis Myth 4: It’s possible to get results after one hypnosis session

Just as with any form of effective therapy, hypnosis takes time to alter our subconscious brains and achieve the results we’re aiming for. This is why regular sessions - either once a month or once a fortnight - are best to allow the hypnotherapy to begin working.

And while you may be super-keen to accelerate your results with even more frequent sessions, it’s important to note that it can take up to two weeks for the effects of your hypnosis session to take hold - so you should limit the frequency of your hypnosis sessions to once per fortnight.

Hypnosis Myth 5: There’s no scientific evidence that hypnosis works

Think hypnosis is one of those new age, ‘woo woo’ practices that doesn’t have any scientific backing? Well, we’ve got good news - there’s a wealth of scientific evidence proving that hypnosis can help with a wide range of issues, including overcoming phobias, losing weight, quitting smoking and managing stress.

If you’re a little sceptical about the effectiveness of hypnosis, take a look at this article that outlines some of the major scientific studies on the impact of hypnosis.
